The central theme of the conference is a human-rights based approach to education in South Africa. The concrete issues that were explored included giving content to the right to education in general, and specifically the rights to early childhood and higher education. The conference further engaged with the intersection between the right to education and other fundamental rights guaranteed in the South African Constitution, such as equality, dignity, religion, language, and other socio-economic rights. Furthermore, it also engaged with components of the right to education relating to infrastructure, which includes concerns around adequacy of resources, support, transport, as well as educational materials and facilities. Lastly, it also dealt with the components of the right to education relating to the adequacy of teachers and how a rights-based approach might affect the teachers that are employed and the management of schools.
