Details

After Dr. Anja Hallacker (Lecturer at Wits University and Director of German Exchange Service in South Africa (DAAD)) gave her welcoming remarks to the students and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, Henning Suhr (Director Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) South Africa) held a presentation on the topic of the German political system. During his presentation, he also drew parallels to the South African political system and pointed out differences and similarities.

The aim of the presentation was threefold: Mr. Suhr discussed party coalitions, ideology as well as political culture and, therein, voters, political parties and politicians. He introduced the students to the major and most powerful political parties in Germany (CDU/CSU, SPD, Afd, Die Linke, FDP, Green Party) while he explained coalition politics and how MPs are voted into the Bundestag (Federal Parliament).

Overall, the students were well-informed about the topic which was reflected within their active engagement and participation in the discussion session.
