Details

The South African Reconciliation Barometer (SARB) Survey is the only South African public opinion survey of its kind that measures public opinion on national unity reconciliation. The SARB 2015 briefing took place on Thursday July 28, 2016 at the Elangeni Hotel in Durban. The research was headed by the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation (IJR) in partnership with KAS and DDP. Head of policy and analysis at IJR Jan Hofmeyr presented the findings. One of the major issues the findings revealed was that almost half of South Africans feel out of touch with key representative institutions, while two thirds believe that their elected leaders do not care about their plight. The survey was conducted amongst a nationally representative sample of 2219 respondents between August and September 2015. In spite of their skepticism in key institutions and elected leaders, most respondents indicated a preference for peaceful means of expressing their grievances. This may imply that the voters are eager to express their dissatisfaction at the ballot box in August in the context of the local government elections.
