Apartheid und Mauerfall-Versoehnung und Wiedervereinigung

Im Rahmen der Deutschen Kulturwochen organisierte das Deutsche Generalkonsulat in Kapstadt vom 7.-8. Dezember 2010 ein Youth Symposium mit ca. 20 Teilnehmern aus Deutschland und Suedafrika. Waehrend sich der erste Tag mit der Frage beschaeftigte, wie junge Deutsche und Suedafrikaner mit ihrer juengsten Geschichte umgehen, stand am zweiten Tag des Symposiums das Thema' Klimawandel' im Fokus. KAS-Stipendiaten Stephanie Adam und Andreas Krasemann nahmen an der Veranstaltung teil und schildern im nachfolgenden Bericht ihre Eindruecke.

"The Things that Unite us" was the title of a conference held on 2. February 2011 and hosted by the FW de Klerk Foundation in partnership with Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung that focussed on the unifying factors in South African society, such as Sport, Ubuntu, universal values and last but not least the South African Constitution. This post-conference publication includes the speeches made by former President FW de Klerk, Anglican Archbishop Thabo Magkoba, Rugby Player Morne' du Plessis, and other prominent South Africans.

No 'one cheque fits all' for SA politics

Book Review
Anthony Butler analyzes in his new book 'Paying for Politics: Party Funding and Political Change in SA and the Global South' why Party Funding is such a difficult area to regulate and why a 'one size fits all' approach won't work. The book further explores the experiences of selected countries, such as Mexico, Malaysia, Botswana, Russia, Brazil and South Africa, through the pens of a range of contributors, as well as the latest thinking on international best practice. The book, funded by Konrad-Aenauer-Stiftung, is published by Jacana.

Vor den letzten südafrikanischen Parlamentswahlen im Jahr 2009 wurde deutlich, dass die Parteienfinanzierung eine Grauzone in der südafrikanischen Gesetzgebung darstellt. Parteispenden an die Regierungs- und Oppositionsparteien können von den Wählern und Wählerinnen nicht nachvollzogen werden, wer wem wie viel und vor allem für was bezahlt, bleibt verschlossen.

Am historischen 9. November hielt Prof. Dr. Bernhard Vogel nicht nur einen bemerkenswerten Vortrag über den Weg vom Fall der Berliner Mauer bis zur Deutschen Einheit vor etwa 200 Zuhörern aus der deutschen Gemeinde in Kapstadt. Für die Gäste war es zugleich die Schilderung gelebter Geschichte, die Prof. Vogel in maßgeblicher politischer Verantwortung mitgestaltet hat.

Nachhaltige Entwicklung und Klimaschutz

Südafrikanische Experten informieren sich über Zukunftskonzepte in Deutschland
Zwei Monate stand Südafrika im Mittelpunkt des Weltinteresses. Die erste Fußballweltmeisterschaft in Afrika rückte die gesamte Region in den Fokus der Medien. Als Gastgeber konnte Südafrika eindrucksvoll beweisen, dass diese aufstrebende Region den Anschluss an die weltweiten Entwicklungen sucht. Das gilt auch für Vorhaben der nachhaltigen Entwicklung und des Klimaschutzes. Von den negativen Auswirkungen einer weiteren Erwärmung der Erde wären die afrikanischen Küstenregionen mit am Meisten betroffen. Wasserknappheit hingegen wäre das Überlebensproblem der kontinentalen Staaten.

SAIIA/KAS Careers Evening 2010

The 2010 South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA)-Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) Careers Evening took place on 11 August at Jan Smuts House, University of the Witwatersrand. The purpose of this event was to provide a platform for postgraduate students in the studies of International Relations, Economics, Law and Journalism to gain a better understanding of the career opportunities available to them. The event included a careers exhibition, followed by a panel of speakers from the selected sectors, who discussed their individual career paths and provided useful advice.
