Hundertausend Menschen demonstrieren gegen die Regierung

Mit der Forderung nach „echter Demokratie“ setzen Demonstrationen der „Rothemden“ das normale Leben in der Hauptstadt Thailands teilweise außer Kraft. Mit der bisher größten Protestbewegung fordern arme Bevölkerungsschichten aus den ländlichen Regionen Thailands die „Rückgabe der Macht an das Volk“. Die Regierung ist paralysiert. Ein Ende der Demonstrationen ist bislang nicht abzusehen.

Thailand: Etappensieg im politischen Tauziehen

Der Oberste Gerichtshof hat am 26. Februar entschieden, zwei Drittel des Vermögens des vom Militär gestürzten Ex-Premiers Thaksin Shinawatra und seiner Familie festzusetzen. Nach dem Militärputsch im Jahr 2006 waren 76 Milliarden Baht (rd. 1,6 Mrd. Euro) des inzwischen ins Ausland geflüchteten ehemaligen Premiers eingefroren worden. Während die Regierung das Urteil als gerecht begrüßt, spricht das Thaksin-Lager von einem politisch motivierten Verfahren. Die Gräben in der thailändischen Gesellschaft vertiefen sich weiter.

Bilanz des Thailändischen ASEAN-Vorsitzes

Ende Juli 2008 übernahm Thailand für eineinhalb Jahre den Vorsitz im Verband der Südostasiatischen Nationen (ASEAN). Eine ehrenvolle Aufgabe für das stolze Königreich, die aber auch mit vielen Herausforderungen und großer Verantwortung einherging. Nach der Übergabe des Vorsitzes an Vietnam Ende 2009 fällt die Bilanz für Thailand eher durchwachsen aus.
