Details

In the debate about political tension in Thailand, various groups in the Thai society have proposed different concepts for solving the current political conflict in the country. The concepts, which are under current public discussion, include:

1)the “New Politics” (30% of the members of parliament should be elected and 70% of them appointed), proposed by People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD).

2)Establishment of an independent committee supervising the constitution amendment, proposed by a group of 24 university presidents.

3)Setting up of a constitution drafting committee to amend the constitution, proposed by the government, the opposition, the President of the Parliament and the President of the Senate.

4)State power reform, which excludes the senate and allows direct PM election, proposed by the Student Alliance of Thailand.

This seminar shall provide a platform for academics, researchers and social activists from Upper Northern Thailand as well as representatives of the media and NGOs to discuss and exchange opinions about the above-mentioned concepts as well as other possible solutions to the current political conflict. Beneath the political concepts this seminar wants to help decreasing the current political confrontation by creating a platform for opinion sharing and communication in general. The conclusions of the seminar shall be published for a broader public.
