The aims of the event were to promote a better understand of the concept of sustainability in general (theory and practice) and to learn about local economy developments especially in places facing with ‘limited resources’. Another objective was the presentation of sustainability as one of the most important values that always should be considered in the planning projects at the local level. During the four day study visit participants learned more about successful projects for urban economic development like the one in Hajdúnánás. Perspectives of self-sustaining villages were also among the topics. Mayors of Rozsály, Panyola, Hernádszentrandás introduced their examples for local economic development and how they could convince the local population to stay in their home towns. On site visits were also included in the program. In addition the participants had the opportunity to visit a unique local project, an example for social and solidarity economy development solutions (Szimbiózis Foundation) in Miskolc. The programme provided practical input to municipal policy making in terms of approaches, tools and real-life examples for the promotion of sustainable rural development and supported international and regional cooperation by exchange of experience and the establishment of cross-border networks.
