Modern Leadership: From Self to Society

Workshop with Students of the KAS-SUIBE Scholarship Program 2014/2015

Scholarship students from KAS Shanghai partner Shanghai University of International Business and Economics (SUIBE) had the opportunity to participate in this three-day workshop, receiving professional training in personal development techniques and finally develop their own understanding of contributing responsibly to the society.

KAS Shanghai organized the weekend in collaboration with its Shanghai-based partner, Constellations International. The workshop’s activities aimed at the students’ ability to develop their personalities, work together in teams, and actively participate in the civil society. This year’s event, which was the second of its kind, specifically centered the prerequisites for leadership in the modern world.

The blend of theory and hands-on exercises enabled the participants to get an insight into their own leadership qualities and their characters. The sessions led the students to open up their minds, increased their creative capabilities and improved the team’s ability to collaborate – important skills for the 20 participants, all of which are just starting their professional careers.

The most urgent challenges that young leaders face in multinational corporations, as well as socially driven organizations became tangible through the personal accounts of Julia Güsten, an entrepreneur from Germany.

Social responsibility needs commitment – and sometimes intrepidity. The case of John Rabe, a German manager for Siemens who saved hundreds of Chinese during the Japanese invasion in 1937 by establishing a protection zone in Nanjing, demonstrates this well. A visit to his former residence, which today hosts a museum, introduced his story to the participants.

Through the accounts of Mrs. Güsten and the visit to the John Rabe Memorial, many of the characteristics needed for socially responsible, modern leadership were introduced to the 20 participants: vision, patience and stamina, passion and a sense of responsibility among them.

The Shanghai University of International Business and Economics is the main partner of KAS Shanghai. The scholarship program guides the recipients at SUIBE for one year through a range of workshops and field trips. Participants are enabled to receive insights into the operations of businesses and corporations, but also develop their own perspectives and personalities.
