This event has been postponed! A new date will be announced as soon as possible. Thank you!

While overall, interest and pressure for a national carbon pricing has increased, there has been much debate over whether African countries should introduce a carbon price into their national systems. In addition to the introduction of the carbon tax in South Africa, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Rwanda, Senegal and Nigeria are considering or carrying out carbon pricing surveys. Africa's interest in reforming fossil fuel subsidies is also growing. This prompted discussions on whether other African countries should do the same. However, it remains to be seen whether the traditional notions of carbon pricing, namely a carbon tax or an emission trading system (ETS), are appropriate instruments for addressing the circumstances and constraints unique to African countries. The study "Carbon Pricing in Sub-Saharan Africa" answers this question by examining whether the discussion on forms of carbon pricing in sub-Saharan Africa needs to be deepened further to better adapt to local needs and challenges. It also aims to inform political actors about the possibilities of introducing a carbon tax in their national context and to discuss its potential economic and social consequences.

During the event, the study authors will provide an overview of the results and provide detailed information on the Senegal case study. After the presentation, there will be a question and answer session, followed by a reception.

The presentation of this study will take place at Savana Hôtel Dakar, Senegal. It will start at 9 a.m. and end at 1 p.m.

The language for this activity will be French.
