Syria: One Year into the New Era – Presentation of Key Research Findings
On 10 December 2025, the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) Türkiye and the Association for Social Development and Aid Mobilization (SGDD-ASAM) jointly hosted a launch event in Ankara to present the results of an extensive field study on developments in Syria. Under the title “The First Year of the New Era in Syria: Expectations, Real-World Dynamics, and Policy Recommendations for the EU and Türkiye,” findings from an ASAM-supported research project were shared, accompanied by policy-oriented assessments.
The study stands out as one of the most comprehensive analyses conducted on Syria to date. The final report, expected in January 2026, is anticipated to be among the first interdisciplinary publications in this field. Covering nearly all Syrian governorates and a wide range of sectors, the research offers an in-depth perspective based on extensive on-the-ground data.
The event opened with remarks by Dr. Markus Hildebrand (KAS Türkiye) and Mr. İbrahim Vurgun Kavlak (SGDD-ASAM). Dr. Hildebrand provided a European perspective on the evolving situation in Syria, while Kavlak underlined the importance of the study for understanding the new realities that have emerged after the regime change. He also noted that detailed data on WASH, shelter, health, education, law, access to services, and security would be presented.
In the following session, Prof. Dr. Serhat Erkmen, Director of the Pros&Cons Security and Risk Analysis Center, presented the key outcomes of the field research, including datasets and analytical findings. The study incorporates in-depth interviews with civil society organizations and public-sector stakeholders, and assesses local service capacities, critical infrastructure, and inter-institutional coordination mechanisms.
The event concluded with a Q&A session and networking reception. The issues addressed during the launch are expected to contribute constructively to future cooperation and strengthen joint work between the involved institutions. The full report of the field study will be published in January 2026.
