The World HandCOV’d: EAEU Strategic dilemmas facing the EAEU in the post-corona world

The pandemic of the new coronavirus is on everyone’s mind. Besides the conspicuous immediate implications for our personal lives the unprecedented events unfolding in front of us seem to have historical magnitude. Even though most analysts agree that the global outbreak of the coronavirus, as a virological phenomenon, is in itself hardly a game-changer for world affairs, it looks increasingly likely that the repercussions of the reactions by governments around the globe will have a significant impact on the international system beyond the pandemic. Among the multitude of ongoing transformations, some will accelerate while others might slow down, take a halt or change direction. But since hardly any of them are likely to remain completely unaffected, it is fair to say that international politics as a whole have fallen captive to COVID-19.

The pandemic disruption is not likely to change our world altogether, but it will clearly have profound geopolitical implications, including for international security. In order to understand those possible implications, the Minsk Dialogue Council on International Relations and KAS Belarus are launching a series of virtual panels that will zoom in on strategic dilemmas facing key pillars of international security in the post-corona world.

This online event will look at the Eurasian Economic Union:

  • What specific security and geopolitical circumstances does the EAEU find itself in at the time of the pandemic disruption?
  • What major security policy dilemmas is the EAEU facing now and is likely to face as the Covid-19 crisis is over?
  • How will the pandemic and its longer-term effects impact the EAEU’s status and role in the international system?
  • What strategic implications will the (non)changing EAEU’s role in the world have for Euro-Atlantic and Eurasian security?

Please join us for this online panel, which will be held via Zoom and live-streamed on the Minsk Dialogue’s Facebook page. To ask a question, please use the chat, which will be available during the event. Registration is required to join the Zoom session.
