Details

Since the last Electoral Act was signed in 2010, Nigeria has tried on many occasions to amend or alter the existing Act to address the manifold issues that make conducting elections very cumbersome. The 2011, 2015 and 2019 general elections witnessed plenty of post-election litigations with various unsatisfactory judgements, which the judiciary explained were based on the dictates and provisions of the existing Electoral Act.

One major issue of discontent in electoral dispute is the issue of using electronic devices for accreditation, voting and transmission of results that many Nigerians believe will bring credibility to their elections and also minimize costs.

The 2022 Electoral Act comes with many new provisions and innovations that need to be understood by all stakeholders. To achieve this, the workshop will cover such topics as: An Overview of Electoral Reforms in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic: 1999 – 2022; 2022 Electoral Act vs. 2010 Electoral Act: Highlighting the Substantive and Noteworthy Provisions in the 2022 Electoral Act; INEC and the 2022 Electoral Act: Operational Challenges and Emerging Risks; Can Electoral Reforms Guarantee Fair, Credible and Inclusive Elections in Nigeria; The 2022 Electoral Act and Political Parties/Candidates: What has Changed?; 2022 Electoral Act and Election Dispute Resolution: The New Banana Peels for Political Parties and Candidates; History of Voters’ Apathy in Nigeria: Can the 2022 Electoral Act stop the Trend?.

The workshop is part of Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung’s support towards sustaining democracy, governance and security sector reform in Nigeria.
