‘Selling Candidates: Political Ads in the 2007 Senatorial Elections’ follows previous KAS publication, ‘Spin & Sell: How Political Ads Shaped the 2004 Elections’, in analyzing the role of media campaigning in the recently concluded senatorial elections held last 2007. The book surveys political ads coupled with research and interviews with campaigners as part of Newsbreak’s continuing assessment on the role of media and political advertising in the election outcome since its reintroduction in the Philippines in 2001.

This book will help media practitioners, political analysts, and advocates who work on improvements of the electoral system and the media coverage of elections. It may also serve politicians and campaign strategists in their endeavor to present themselves in a way that gives the voters a real choice.

‘Selling Candidates: Political Ads in the 2007 Senatorial Elections’ was launched at the Hyatt Hotel last May 13, 2008, and was featured on the television show Media in Focus on ANC (an ABS-CBN News Channel). The show featured interviews with book writers Dr. Ana Maria Tabunda, Carmela Fonbuena, followed by Senator Alan Peter Cayetano, former Congressman and Senatorial aspirant Prospero Pichay, and, lastly, KAS country representative Klaus Preschle, Newsbreak editor-in-chief Marites Vitug, managing director of Gesellschaft für Markt- und Sozialforschung GmbH (GMS) and expert on political opinion and social research Dr Helmut Jung.
