December 6, 2006 – The 4th Konrad Adenauer Medal of Excellence (KAME) was awarded to Bohol Gov. Erico B. Aumentado, Mayor Mel Senen S. Sarmiento, Calbayog City, Mayor Dixon Q. Yasay, Municipality of Opol, Misamis Oriental, and Barangay Captain Carlos C. Rigor, Barangay Paco, Mankayan, Benguet at the Manila Hotel. German Ambassador Dr. Axel Weishaupt, Rep. Edgardo Chatto and Rep. Eladio Jala were among the attendees at the ceremony. The KAME is an award for the best managed local governments and is the only foreign award for such purpose recognized by the Philippine Government. It is sponsored by the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) Philippines and administered by the Local Government Development Foundation (LOGODEF) – KAS Philippines’ partner in developing local authorities in an environment of increasing decentralization. The award has been given to deserving recipients every three years since 1996. Among its awardees are Chairman Bayani Fernando, current head of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, Rep. Rodolfo Agbayani, Nueva Vizcaya, and Mayor Jesse Robredo, Naga City. Recipients of the award are seen to be upholding the work ideals of Konrad Adenauer, a one time mayor of Cologne, Germany from 1921-1933 and eventually the first Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany. The award stands for the ideals of Christian democracy - social justice and equality among individuals and the society at large. KAME has an international sister award known as the Konrad Adenauer Local Governments Award (KALGA), which is given to select local governments in East and Southeast Asia. The Province of Bulacan under the administration of Governor Josie dela Cruz as well as the City of Olongapo under Mayor Katherine Gordon have been KALGA awardees.
