A Change in China’s Media Landscape - Foundation Office China
Workshop
Details
For the time being, students from the Cologne School of Journalism and from the Media School of Fudan University take part at a summer school in order to get an insight into China’s media landscape. It also shall improve the exchange between young journalists from China and Germany.
As part of this summer school the KAS Shanghai organised a workshop on the everyday work of Chinese journalists. First, Dr. Peter Hefele, director of the KAS Shanghai, introduced the work of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung in the field of media to the students and described the media programme Asia of the KAS.
Then, Ma Jun, editor of the Shanghai business newspaper China Business News, described methods and ethics of Chinese journalists, but also pointed out several restrictions that journalists are subjected to. He portrayed very detailed the role and influence of new media, especially of microblogs, for the work of Chinese journalists and for society in general.
In the following discussion various issues were debated, such as the differences in methods used by German and Chinese journalists, the relationship between media and enterprises and the internationalisation of the Chinese media. Which kinds of media are used to which extent and are estimated as trustworthy depends on region, age and educational background of the persons concerned. That is also the reason why influence and trustworthiness of traditional and new social media vary significantly.
