Natural Resources and Political Options in Latin America

This book helps to understand the advantages and obstacles for the implementation of renewable energies in Latin America. We make suggestions for enhancing regional engagement with the UN 2030 agenda, in particular Sustainable Development Goal 7 (clean and affordable energy), and provide an in-depth discussion of climate mitigation management challenges.

Energy policy in Latin America is going through a process of structural change, with the reduction of the costs of wind and solar energy, the discovery of shale gas in Argentina and the pre-salt oil in the coastal zone of Rio de Janeiro. Furthermore, the effects of climate change in the region, especially in the Caribbean, have been a challenge for the community. Latin America is rich in renewable resources and has a long tradition of hydroelectric plants and biomass fuels. However, its dependence on fossil fuels, dissonant interests, and limited economic resources pose challenges for regional integration and a transition to low-carbon economies.

This project discusses and proposes paths for the sustainable development of the region and defends the alignment of stakeholder incentives for the adoption of renewable energies. Climate change has increased the need for international action. Since economic growth is, to a large extent, linked to energy use, access to reliable, efficient and sustainable energy is crucial to moving towards a low-carbon economy.

We collected contributions from researchers from different areas of activity around the world, ensuring a broad and interdisciplinary vision of the subject. The authors take a multidisciplinary approach to address issues of resource governance, conservation, energy transition, and environmental conflict.
