Conversation: Geoengineering and its potential/risks in the current debate

Project: Innovation, technology and knowledge for the governance of biodiversity and climate change in Latin America

In Geoengineering there are 2 main approaches: on the one hand, there is the removal of CO2 (RDC) which consists of the capture and storage of GHG, and on the other the Modification of Solar Radiation (SRM) which consists of increasing the solar radiation that reflects the atmosphere and prevent it from being "sequestered" due to the (increasing) greenhouse effect on the planet.

For this reason, to have an overview of this controversial topic, we have a presentation by Alia Hassan (Carnegie Climate Governance Initiative) who has been working for some time to promote the debate on this technology so that progress can be made based on evidence and reason.

The main interventions of the MRS are the enhancement of the brightness of marine clouds, the thinning of cirrus clouds, the injection of aerosols into the stratosphere and the construction of reflective surfaces on land. The common denominator of them, beyond being new technologies, are the positions and opinions that they generate as a strategy against climate change; however, it is necessary to debate it and continue researching it from a scientific perspective that includes beneficial and harmful environmental, social and economic impacts so that it can be added as one more solution to achieve GHG mitigation on the planet, in a complementary manner, accepted by the affected populations, with scientific consensus and on the appropriate scale of implementation.

Soon we will make a video summary of this conversation to deepen the topic.
