Digital transformation has made data increasingly important in government governance, from development planning to public service delivery. Indonesia continues to strengthen its data ecosystem through One Data Indonesia, the use of the National Identity Number as a single identifier, the Digital Population Identity, and the National Single Data for Socio-Economic.
However, data integration also presents challenges related to accuracy, interoperability, security, personal data protection, the digital divide, and citizens’ rights to access and correct their data. Therefore, strengthening the state’s capacity to manage data needs to be accompanied by transparency, accountability, inclusiveness, and democratic oversight mechanisms.
Against this background, the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, the Ministry of Home Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, and The Habibie Center organised a Democracy Dialogue entitled “Strengthening the National Data Ecosystem: Towards Democratic and Accountable Data Governance.” The dialogue provided a platform for exchanging ideas on promoting an integrated, inclusive and accountable national data ecosystem that safeguards citizens’ rights.
