Indonesia has made significant progress in expanding access to education for women. Women’s participation as educators is very high, even dominant. However, research conducted by the Innovation team—a collaboration between the Indonesian and Australian governments on education equality—revealed striking findings across 16 districts and cities in Indonesia. While female teachers are the majority, they take longer to be promoted to school principal positions. The study also confirmed a clear imbalance between male and female principals. More than 70% of teachers nationwide are women—an extraordinary achievement. Yet, only about 30% have managed to reach the position of school principal.
This paradox is more than just numbers; it is a call to action. Women are present and contributing, but now it is time for them to lead. Their leadership capacity must be strengthened so that their voices are heard not only in classrooms but also in decision-making spaces. This training program is designed to empower women to take on strategic roles and ensure that equality is not just rhetoric but reality. With stronger women’s leadership, Indonesia’s education will become more advanced, inclusive, and impactful.
