This discussion will focus on how to advance nuclear disarmament, arms control and risk reduction, in a changing world witnessing on-going armed and trade conflicts, weakening of the nuclear disarmament and arms control architecture including collapse of important Cold War nuclear arms control treaties, stasis in UN disarmament bodies and in the NPT review process, as well as continuing nuclear non-proliferation challenges.

Panelists:

Alexander Kmentt: (Director of Disarmament, Arms Control and Non-Proliferation, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Austria; President of the 2022 Vienna Conference on Humanitarian Impact of Nuclear Weapons and the First Meeting of States Parties to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons; he is the author of the book, The Treaty Prohibiting Nuclear Weapons: How it was achieved and Why it Matters (2021)).

Tytti Erasto: (Senior Researcher in the Weapons of Mass Destruction Programme, at the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), focusing on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation issues; her recent and current research focuses inter alia on the Iran nuclear deal, the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, the U.S./NATO-Russia dispute over missile defence).

Anatol Lieven: (Director, Eurasia Programme, Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft; formerly a professor at Georgetown University in Qatar and in the War Studies Department of King’s College London; his latest book, Climate Change and the Nation State, was published in March 2020 and in an updated paperback edition in Fall 2021; and Ukraine and Russia: A Fraternal Rivalry was published by the US Institute of Peace in 1999).

Moderator:

Tariq Rauf: is a Member of the Board of Directors of Atomic Reporters and the Vice Chair of the Board of Directors of Canadian Pugwash. He is former Head of Verification and Security Policy, Alternate Head of NPT Delegation, IAEA; he was a member of the Eminent Persons Group for Substantive Progress on Nuclear Disarmament convened by the Foreign Minister of Japan; he has been a Delegate at all NPT meetings since 1987 and as a member of the Canadian NPT Delegation.
