Details

Samar Ghattas is living in Bethlehem where she teaches arts history at the local university. Her previous exhibitions took place in the USA, Europe and in her homeland Palestine. As a Greek-Orthodox Christian she feels closely connected to her home town Bethlehem and near-by Jerusalem.

The opus of Samar Ghattas offers this access in a special way as it reflects the perceptions and sensations of a young Palestinian during the second Intifada and gives a private impression of everyday-life in Palestine.

In his welcoming speech Thomas Birringer, Resident Representative of the Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation to the Palestinian Autonomous Territories, emphasized that art is preferable to violence as a means of expressing emotions and that it furthermore requires artistic freedom. The artist presented her works and gave the audience a vivid understanding of the life of a Christian woman during the Intifada. The talented students of the Theological Studies Year provided the supporting musical program.

At the following reception the guests of the opening – Palestinians as well as Israelis – exchanged their point of view on topics such as arts, culture and politics.
