Baader Youth Network Organizes a Model United Nations Simulation

A Model United Nations (MUN) simulation was held in Ramallah from October 30 to November 1, 2008, in the framework of the Baader Youth Network. For Baader members from the main cities of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, the objective of this simulation was to learn about how the General Assembly and the Security Council of the United Nations work.

The topic of this simulation was “Kosovo” which the participants who were distributed to country delegations, had prepared during two previous lectures. At the beginning of the workshop, Dr. Yasser Amouri, Head of Graduate Studies Department, Faculty of Law at Bir Zeit University, acquainted them with rules and procedures of MUN conferences. The simulation itself was conducted by Jamie-Marie Mandell and Hazam Tahbub.

During the conference the young attendants were asked to negotiate in interest of their country groups and to convince other delegations of their draft resolutions. The negotiations reached a high level of professionalism with regard to the UN regulations according to the line of argumentation of the represented countries. However, as it also happens in real UN conferences, a final resolution could not be passed. The participants stated that during the simulation they had gained a deep understanding of resolution drafting, voting procedures of the United Nations and the major procedural rules of the General Assembly and Security Council.

The Baader Youth Network is a joint initiative of IPCC Jerusalem and KAS Ramallah, funded by the German Foreign Office within the framework of the program “Empowering Democracy”. Focusing on political participation of the Palestinian Youth and strengthening their role in the civil society and the political arena, as well as supporting future leaders and cutting back gender barriers, this project supports the build-up of a pluralistic, democratic and viable civil society in the Palestinian Territories.
