The Africa Journalism and Media Summit is an annual gathering that brings together stakeholders from different sectors, including media, academia, government, civil society, and business. Organized by the Zimbabwe Centre for Media and Information Literacy (ZCMIL) in collaboration with the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, the summit aims to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing among participants from Zimbabwe and other parts of Africa.

The summit aims to provide a platform for journalists, media professionals, academics, and other stakeholders to share their experiences, insights, and innovations in the field of journalism. It focuses on exploring topics such as the role of AI in journalism, the potential of data journalism, and the power of social media platforms in shaping public opinion. The summit will also examine the challenges that journalists face in terms of press freedom, disinformation, and misinformation.

The goal of the “New Horizons in Sub-Saharan African Journalism: Embracing Innovation and Adapting to Change in the Age of AI” summit is to facilitate dialogue and knowledge exchange among journalists, media practitioners, researchers, policymakers, and industry stakeholders on how to embrace innovation and adapt to change in the rapidly evolving field of journalism, with a specific focus on the impact of AI.

 

Objectives:

 

  • To explore the latest trends and innovations in the field of journalism in Sub-Saharan Africa, with a focus on AI, data journalism, business models, and platform power.
  • To share best practices and challenges in press freedom, journalism training in schools, and emerging issues such as disinformation and misinformation.
  • To identify opportunities for collaboration between media organizations, journalists, researchers, and policymakers to support the growth and development of journalism in Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • To provide a platform for networking and exchange of ideas among media practitioners, researchers, policymakers, and industry stakeholders.

 

Expected Outcomes:

 

  • Increased awareness and understanding of the latest trends and innovations in the field of journalism in Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Improved knowledge and skills among media practitioners, journalists, and researchers on how to use AI and other innovative tools in journalism practice.
