The certificate program dealt with one of the most important topics that has strongly influenced the whole world and Turkey expecially in the recent years, in order to provide students with both interdisciplinary and subject-specific access to the topic of migration. In addition to the numerous lectures, the 5-day program was enriched by social activities such as film screenings and excursions.

The event was opened with a welcome address by Prof. Dr. M. Murat Erdoğan, Director of TAGU, and Walter Glos, Director of KAS Turkey. After the opening speeches, Prof. Erdoğan gave a lecture on the topic "Overview of Migration and Social Integration in Turkey". Afterwards, Prof. Dr. Nermin Abadan Unat, guest of honour and one of the first and most renowned researchers in the field of migration in Turkey, continued with her lecture. According to Unat, the social changes caused by migration and urbanization represent a multidisciplinary field of research and therefore a common field of research in sociology, anthropology, history, geography, economics, politics and international relations. In the second session, Assist. Prof. Dr. Nihal Eminoğlu from Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University gave a lecture entitled "Which Migration? - A Conceptual Analysis". The session ended with the screening of the film "Guest" by Andaç Haznedaroğlu.

On the 2nd day, Assoz. Professor Didem Danış from Galatasaray University contributed to the program with her lecture "Qualitative and Quantitative Methods of Migration Research". Danış also informed the participants about the Research Association for Migration (GAR) of which she is a founding member. The second lecture was held by Prof. Dr. Ayhan Kaya from Bilgi University on the topic "Turks Abroad and Transnational Space". He explained that migration, which for many years has been considered as a blessing for the industrialized countries, is now seen as a cause of instability and insecurity. The conditions for the increased perception of migration as a "security risk" are determined by the nation states. The 2nd day ended with the screening of the film "In the Fade" by Fatih Akın.

On the 3rd day of the program, two further sessions took place. In the first session, Prof. Dr. Şebnem Akçapar from the University of Social Sciences in Ankara informed the participants on the topic of "migration diplomacy". Can Vodina, from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Istanbul, hold a speech in the second session, where he informed the students about the activities of the UNHCR for refugees living in Turkey and also informed them about career and internship opportunities in international organizations such as the UNHCR. The session ended with the screening of the film "Capernaum" by Nadine Labaki.

On the 4th day of the program, Assoz. Prof. Dr. Ayselin Gözde Yıldız from Yasar University gave a lecture on "Human Smuggling and Irregular Migration" and explained how flight and illegal migration is facilitated and globalized by modern means of communication and a growing smuggling crime. The numerous participants, the great interest and the valuable discussions of the first Migration Certificate Program showed that the program was a complete success. Finally, Prof. Dr. M. Murat Erdogan and Anastasia Pazer, project coordinator at the KAS-Turkey office, handed over the certificates to the participants.

The program continued with excursions to the office of SGDD-ASAM Istanbul on Thursday and to the Refugee Association in Sultanbeyli on Friday. The excursions enabled the students to see and evaluate the activities for the refugees on site.

The "Certificate Program on Migration" organised by KAS Turkey in co-operation with TAGU is to be carried out at four universities per year in different cities across Turkey. The second program will take place at the University of Social Sciences in Ankara from 16th to 20th December 2019.

The aim of the certificate program is to provide students in Turkey with knowledge, information and intercultural skills based on scientific research through lectures by the most renowned academics in the field of migration research. With the creation of this discussion platform the perception of young students of migration issues should be sensitized.

In addition, by involving the aid organisations and excursions active in the field of migration, the participants will be able to build up a network that will open up new career perspectives for them.
