Question (translated from German): “How important is it to you to protect the climate? Very important, important, not so important, not important at all?” Figures in per cent. Missing values to 100 per cent: not so important, not important at all, don’t know/no answer. Respondents: 4,247. Survey 1035 on behalf of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung.

Climate protection is a matter of great importance to the vast majority of people in Germany. Across all voter groups, a (clear) majority considers it important to protect the climate.

The issue of climate protection literally became a hot topic again during the sweltering summer of 2026: in the latest Politbarometer (Forschungsgruppe Wahlen, August 2026), the climate and energy issue has returned to the top of the list of the most important political issues for the first time in three years. Data from the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung shows that climate protection is highly important across all party support groups. Nevertheless, there are also differences. Protecting the climate is particularly important to supporters of the Greens (58 per cent say it is ‘very important’) – amongst AfD voters, this applies to only 13 per cent. Supporters of the CDU/CSU (31 per cent) and the other parties fall somewhere in between. However, across all voter groups, a (large) majority consider protecting the climate to be important or very important.

Even though the climate has not been among the most important political issues in opinion polls for a long time, ‘protecting the climate’ remains fundamentally a high priority for people in Germany.
