Costa Rica
El régimen democrático costarricense es presidencial. La presidencia de la República conforma el Poder Ejecutivo y es elegida cada cuatro años. La persona electa designa todas las jefaturas de sus ministerios de forma directa, además de escoger sus dos vicepresidencias. El Poder Legislativo, denominado constitucionalmente “el Primer Poder de la República”, es una asamblea unicameral conformada por 57 representantes. Las diputaciones son elegidas cada 4 años durante el proceso electoral que a su vez define la presidencia del Ejecutivo y este proceso renueva la Asamblea por completo. Completa la división de poderes el Poder Judicial, que cuenta con una magistratura particular denominada Sala Constitucional cuya función es atender denuncias sobre acciones o legislaciones que violen la Constitución Política, por lo tanto esta Sala no sólo es un órgano de control jurídico, sino también político.
El contexto partidario actual se basa en eventos históricos que se desarrollaron a finales de la década de 1940, cuando se da un enfrentamiento armado entre el Ejército de Liberación Nacional y la Alianza entre el Partido Republicano y el Partido Comunista, el duelo se salda con la histórica reunión, que medió la Iglesia Católica, en la que se presenta la rendición de la Alianza. Superado el conflicto, se vislumbra una nueva clase gobernante bajo el liderazgo de José Figueres Ferrer, quien transformó su ejército en el Partido Liberación Nacional (PLN), mientras que su oposición logró converger en el Partido Unidad Social Cristiana (PUSC) hasta la década de 1980, asentando de esta forma el período del bipartidismo que duró 16 años y se caracterizó por la alternancia en el poder entre el PLN y el PUSC.
El bipartidismo acabó en gran parte debido a los fuertes cuestionamientos por corrupción a tres expresidentes de la República, de ambos partidos, esto causó la formación de nuevas agrupaciones políticas para el período electoral de 2002, pero fue el Partido Acción Ciudadana (PAC) el que logró posicionarse como una tercera fuerza electoral al alcanzar un 26% de los votos emitidos para la presidencia. En los dos siguientes procesos electorales el PLN logró la victoria, seguido de cerca por el PAC que consiguió asegurar el segundo lugar, como tercera opción en preferencia de los votantes se perfiló el Partido Movimiento Libertario y en cuarto lugar el PUSC.
En 2014, el candidato del partido PAC, Luis Guillermo Solís, ganó las elecciones presidenciales. Al mismo tiempo se realizaron las elecciones parlamentarias, en las cuales el partido PLN recibió la mayoridad de votos. Como partido más fuerte, han obtenido 18 disputados en la Asamblea Legislativa, seguido por el partido gobernante con 13 escaños. En estas elecciones el PUSC logró dos mandatos más, así que ahora están representados por 8 disputados.
