Problem Solving and Scientific Thinking with Dr. Thomas Gronauer
Training
Problem solving and scientific thinking are crucial for continuous self-improvement and building resilience by replacing impulsive, assumption-based problem-solving with structured, evidence-based experimentation. Thus, in this workshop, we learn how to overcome cognitive biases, and foster sustainable skills for life-long learning.
Why Should I Care About… Trade Route Disuptions?
Malaysia's Economy: Now, Near, and Next
In 2026, the Middle East conflict has escalated into sustained military exchanges. The fighting has not stopped. Ceasefire talks have broken down more than once. The Strait of Hormuz, which carries roughly one-fifth of the world's traded oil, remains under threat. Shipping costs on Persian Gulf routes have risen sharply. Energy markets have been volatile since the conflict began. Malaysia is not involved in this conflict. But as a trade-dependent economy integrated into global supply chains, Malaysia is exposed to the economic fallout in ways that are concrete and already visible.

Climate Change and Institutional Solutions for Effective Climate Action
Climate change poses increasingly complex and multi-dimensional risks to Sarawak’s development trajectory, affecting sectors such as natural resource management, public health, infrastructure, food security, and livelihoods. As Sarawak advances its development aspirations, while simultaneously managing biodiversity, ecosystems, and social equity, the role of institutions in shaping, coordinating, and delivering effective climate action has become critical. While awareness of climate risks has grown, climate responses often remain fragmented across sectors and levels of governance. Ministries, agencies, academic institutions, and civil society organisations (CSOs) frequently approach climate-related challenges through sector-specific or project-based interventions, resulting in coordination gaps, duplication of efforts, and limited scalability of successful initiatives. Strengthening institutional coherence, policy alignment, and cross-sector collaboration is therefore central to translating climate commitments into tangible outcomes. In this context, institutional solutions—such as governance frameworks, regulatory instruments, inter-agency coordination mechanisms, data-sharing platforms, and inclusive stakeholder engagement models—are essential enablers of effective climate action. Building a shared understanding of these institutional dimensions among the civil service, academia, and CSOs can help improve policy design, implementation, collaboration and coordination, monitoring, reporting and verification. This workshop is conceived as a platform to bring together key stakeholders to examine how institutional arrangements in Sarawak can be strengthened to support more integrated, evidence-based, and impactful climate action.

Why should I care about AI and social Media among the youth
Youth today are among the most digitally connected groups in society. Social media platforms and AIpowered tools increasingly influence how information is produced, shared, and consumed. AI-driven algorithms now shape online content, recommend information, and even generate text, images, and videos. At the same time, governments around the world are debating how to regulate social media access for younger users. In Malaysia, policymakers have recently discussed restrictions on social media access for individuals under the age of 16 as part of broader efforts to address cyberbullying, online scams, and harmful digital content. Similar discussions are taking place in countries such as Australia and several European states, highlighting a growing global concern about the impact of digital platforms on youth. These developments raise important questions: How is AI shaping online spaces? Should governments regulate social media access for young users? And what role should youth play in shaping digital governance? This programme aims to provide a platform for youth to engage critically with these questions and better understand the evolving digital landscape.
