Tempus Fugit – Time Flees
For the second time in a row, the title of the conference has been inspired by a Roman poet—the phrase fugit inreparabile tempus (it escapes, irretrievable time) appears in Virgil’s Georgics. With the Doomsday Clock set just 100 seconds before midnight, the search for solutions to the world’s problems could not be more urgent.

A Restless Embrace of the Past?
The 8th Conference on Russia
The 2022 iteration of the Conference seeks to continue this tradition of excellence with a focus on Russia in the new paradigm of the COVID-19 pandemic. With this approach, the 2022 conference will seek to reframe much of the discussion, deductions or conclusions that emerged from previous Conferences. Has the pandemic altered Russia’s relationship with the West? What flaws or resilience in Russian society does COVID-19 reveal? Are there now more opportunities for collaboration, or are these developments merely pointing to more competition? The 2022 Conference on Russia will attempt to answer some of these concerns, helping to orientate and shape our thinking and point us in the right direction to better cope with new challenges or issues as we look towards 2023.

Homo Sovieticus
30 Years of Freedom
Almost 30 years after the collapse of the Soviet Union we can observe the return of rhetoric of a strong person of the totalitarian era. Could this be facilitated by the remains of totalitarian subservience in our heads and minds? The Director of the film Ivo Briedis and journalist Rita Ruduša, both born in the USSR, are going on a journey to explore the phenomenon of “Homo Sovieticus” and to discover whether a human being of the totalitarian mindset has specific geographical boundaries.

My Neighbour´s Problem Today - Mine Tomorrow
The title of the conference was inspired by the Roman poet Horace – Nam tua res agitur, paries cum proximus ardet (You too are in danger, when your neighbour’s house is on fire). This proved to be an even more relevant theme in 2021 than it would have been in 2020. The past year has highlighted that the boundaries between global, regional, and local issues are increasingly blurred and such distinctions are ever more artificial. It has shown that it is impossible to live in an isolated bubble, and that it is wiser to help your neighbours fight their fires than to wait until they reach your own home.

Infokrieg des 21. Jahrhunderts

Responding to Russia in a Multi-Threat World
The Conference on Russia changes its perspective biennially, and as the 2020 iteration “Russia in the World: Vision and Realities” focused on internal discussions within Russia – the 2021 Conference is focusing on how the West is preparing, reacting, and responding to Russian activities at these times of turmoil.
