Details

From 30th of November to 4th of December 2026, newsroom managers from across Sub-Saharan Africa will come together for a five-day workshop “Managing Newsrooms in the Age of Disruption”. The programme will explore how news organisations can respond to technological, economic and political changes while protecting editorial quality, independence and public trust.

Digital transformation is reshaping how journalism is produced, distributed and financed. Through practical sessions, group discussions and real-world case studies, participants will examine what disruption means for their own newsrooms and develop strategies for managing change, strengthening teams and reaching new audiences.

The programme brings together experienced editors, journalists and media experts. Sessions will address innovative content strategies, emerging revenue models, partnerships with digital creators and the responsible use of artificial intelligence. Participants will also consider how African newsrooms can use AI while preserving local languages, cultural contexts and distinct editorial voices.

Further discussions will focus on leading newsrooms in hostile or uncertain environments, maintaining cross-border reporting operations and managing political or commercial pressure. The programme will also highlight the importance of emotional intelligence, diversity and mental health in creating resilient and successful editorial teams.

A newsroom visit will give participants practical insight into the use of AI, open-source intelligence and technology in investigative journalism.

By connecting newsroom managers and encouraging the exchange of experiences from across the continent, the programme aims to help African newsrooms become more innovative, sustainable and prepared for future disruption.
