German Basic Law Day – 76 Years of Constitutional Democracy

Germany’s Constitution remains a symbol of freedom, dignity, and the rule of law

On 23 May, we mark the anniversary of Germany’s Basic Law – a foundation of post-war democratic reconstruction and Konrad Adenauer’s enduring European vision.

German Basic Law Day

For 76 years, Germany’s Basic Law has guaranteed freedom, dignity, and the rule of law. Adopted on 23 May 1949, it laid the foundation for a democratic Germany committed to European values and cooperation.

This day is closely tied to the legacy of Konrad Adenauer, the first Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany and a key architect of democratic reconstruction after World War II. His role in establishing the Basic Law as a pillar of stability and social cohesion shaped Germany’s post-war development.

At KAS, we celebrate not just a constitutional text, but a lasting promise: democracy must be defended, passed on, and lived – every single day.
