EDITORIAL
Ladies and Gentlemen,
If there was one piece of good news from Ethiopia this week, it was this:
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and the Sudanese military leader, General Abdel Fattah, said they had found a solution to peacefully resolve tensions between their two countries. This was the outcome of talks they had on the sidelines of a meeting of the IGAD Regional Economic Community in Nairobi.
In late June, Sudan had accused Ethiopia of killing seven Sudanese soldiers and one civilian in the Al-Fashaqa border region. Residents of both countries claim the region. A week ago, AU Commission Chairperson Moussa Fakhi called on the neighboring countries not to raise arms against each other.
However, the overall situation in Ethiopia is very concerning. On Monday, news broke of a massacre in the northern part of the Oromia region that presumably targeted members of the Amhara ethnic group in particular. The exact number of victims is not yet known. Prime Minister Abiy blamed the rebel group the "Oromo Liberation Army" (OLA). The Ethiopian parliament formed a committee of inquiry. Just two weeks ago, an estimated 300 civilians were killed in a massacre in the same part of the country. Once again, Amharas are said to have been targeted. The OLA denied any accusations. The events have caused grief, pain and anger in large parts of the Ethiopian population. Many people are in shock.
On Tuesday, the situation in the country grew more tense, with unforeseeable consequences, when the government removed subsidies on fuel prices, after which the price of a liter of gasoline increased by nearly a third. The liter of diesel increased by more than a third. Public transport is supposed to be exempt from the increase. However, this cannot prevent that life in Ethiopia will become even more expensive. The consequences of the Ukraine war have been felt for weeks. Food prices have become more expensive. Many people are having great difficulty keeping up.
We hope you liked this newsletter edition and find it helpful.
Sincerely,
Benno Müchler
