In mid-April, CDU Member of the German Bundestag Roderich Kiesewetter visited Ethiopia to learn about the country and the work of the African Union. One focus of the trip was infrastructure projects in Ethiopia and Africa. The KAS Office in Addis Ababa organized the visit.

At the AU headquarters, he met Ambassador Amr Aljowaily, advisor to AU Deputy Commission President Dr. Monique Nsanzabaganwa, and spoke with him about the AU's role in peace and security. At the Ethiopian Parliament, he was received by the Chairperson of the Foreign Relations and Peace Standing Committee of the House of Peoples’ Representatives, Dr. Dima Negewo. Both stressed the importance of increased exchange between parliamentarians of Germany and Ethiopia.

After further talks, Kiesewetter participated in a high-level panel event of the KAS  Office in Addis Ababa, which focused on the Global Gateway Initiative of the EU and infrastructure projects in Africa. Among others, the German Ambassador, the EU Ambassador to the AU as well as the Head of the African Energy Commission were represented on the panel. The German GIZ is working at the park to promote social standards, among other things.

After Hawassa, the member of the German Bundestag traveled on to Jijiga, the capital of Ethiopia's Somali region, to get an idea of the current drought in the Horn of Africa. He met with representatives of the local government. The German GIZ is involved locally, particularly in the area of  drought resilience, and demonstrated the important work being done on the ground. Three million people in the Somali region alone are currently affected by the drought.
