On Wednesday, April 29, we presented the KAS-supported study "Collective Memory and Institutional Reforms in Post-Communist Albania" by Elvin Gjevori as part of a discussion with Albanian and international students currently studying in Albania.
Together with Christian Forneck, advisor for foreign and security policy of the CDU/CSU in the German Bundestag, Gentian Elezi and the author of the study, we reflected on how different institutions in post-communist Albania have taken different reform paths. While the armed forces were gradually depoliticized and Albania finally joined NATO, the judiciary remained politicized. This led to the need for far-reaching reform as a prerequisite for integration into the European Union. This local perspective was supplemented by the German view of Albania's future in the EU as well as security policy issues within the Union.
