Details

Newly discovered historical documents that are symbolic of the formation of nationhood will be exhibited.

The EHU jointly with the Lithuanian Central State Archive spent over a year examining the historical documents dating back to 1918-1944. Among them is an autobiography and application to study in the USA by the most famous Belarusian space researcher Boris Kit. In America he became one of the most renowned space researchers in the world.

Personal documents of the founders of the first Belarusian political organizations, newspapers, national museums, and scientific organizations as well as diplomatic passports of Belarusian People’s Republic’s state servants and historical material from the biggest meeting of the Belarusian Peasants’ and Workers’ Union in Belarus will also be displayed.

“Upon examination of the archive material it has been agreed that Belarusian People’s Republic created in 1918 upon declaration of independence had far more solid foundations of nationhood than had previously been thought”, said Juri Jurkevitš, coordinator of the exhibition.

The official opening of the exhibition will take place at 11 am in the Lithuanian Central State Archive. Later a portable exhibition will be opened at the European Humanities University’s academic building (Valakupių g. 5) and will be open for visitors until April 1. It is also planned to present this exhibition in Belarus.

The exhibition is organized as one of the Belarusian week’s events to commemorate Belarusian Freedom Day.

Exploration, translation, and presentation of the archive material has been kindly supported by the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) and the Lithuanian Central State Archive.
