Refugee debate needs European solution

Antonio Tajani emphasizes the importance of Germany

"We need a long-term strategy at the European level on how to reduce refugee numbers. Germany has an important role to play here," said Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani during his visit to the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Berlin on Thursday. Tajani reported on the recent increase in the number of refugees in Italy and the resulting challenges for his country. He emphasized the need for migration agreements between the European Union and the countries of origin.

In addition to the current refugee situation in the Mediterranean, the exchange between the Forza Italia party leader and members of the Bundestag also focused on the enlargement process of the European Union. Italy has maintained close relations with the countries of the Western Balkans for many years and supports them on their way into the European Union. In this context, the participants also discussed necessary reforms of the decision-making processes of the European Union. Furthermore, they looked forward to next year's European elections and the prospects of the EPP Group. Antonio Tajani as well as Prof. Dr. Hans-Gert Pöttering, former President of the European Parliament and European Commissioner of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, reaffirmed the importance of cooperation between Germany and Italy at the European level.
