Teaching the Holocaust in Greece - Foundation Office Greece and Cyprus
Event Reports
The Jewish Museum of Greece, in cooperation with KAS Athens and the Jewish historical institution Centropa, organized a seminar on Holocaust education. The workshop took place under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Education and was addressed to Greek teachers and professors aiming to introduce teaching the Holocaust in the Greek education curriculum.
The seminar participants had the chance to meet two surviving jews from Greece, Sarah Yesuah and Moses Yussurum, which was a most impressive experience for the teachers. Among the further speakers were Professor Odette Varon-Vassard, Professor Maria Efthimiou and Professor Alkis Rigos. Edward Serotta and Fabian Rühle from Centropa presented the documentary “A bookstore in six chapters: the story of Solomon and Renee Molho”. Finally, Yiftach Meiri, representing the International Holocaust School of Yad Vashem, gave his input on teaching the Holocaust.
Throughout the whole seminar particular attention was given to Northern Greece, especially to Thessaloniki, where the Jewish community had been thriving before the Nazi deportations.
