As a consequence of rising euro-scepticism throughout Europe, KAS Athens co-organized, alongside the Institute of International Relations (IDIS), a panel discussion on the question “Europe – No, Thanks?: Facing the Challenge of Euro-Scepticism”.

The discussion was set in the format of an experts’ roundtable under the guidance of the moderator, Dimitris Keridis, Associate Professor of International Politics at Panteion University. The discussion focused on Euroscepticism, the upcoming European elections and the rise of extreme parties across Europe.

Marietta Giannakou, Member of European Parliament, made remarks on Euroscepticism and the future of the European Union, giving insights from her year-long experience in political life. Nico Lange, who serves as Deputy Director of the Department of Politics and Consulting at Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Berlin, gave very important advice regarding the rise of extreme ideologies across Europe. Magali Balent Brisemeur, Project Director at the Foundation Robert Schuman and Professor at Sciences-Po Paris presented the case of the rise of the National Front party in France. Finally, Harry Papasotiriou, Professor of International Politics at Panteion University, shared his expertise on the development of world affairs and European Integration. All speakers, representing different countries, embarked on a comparative analysis on euroscepticism across Europe.

The discussion was attended by many university students and professionals coming from academia and politics. Following the discussion, a very lively Q&A session took place.
