Details

Germany undisputedly exercises a key leadership role in the functioning of the European Union. Its economic and political weight, combined with a commitment to European integration, ensures that the country is at the heart of EU decision making. The EU itself faces a host of substantial challenges (of which Brexit is only one among many). Moreover, following the recent German federal election, the prospect of a tripartite coalition between the CDU/CSU, FDP and Greens may well constrain Chancellor Angela Merkel in any efforts to deepen integration, such as further fiscal and political union in the Eurozone. At this critical juncture, join us for a discussion with senior figures from Germany and the UK on the political prospects for the Bundesrepublik and the European Union.

Pannelists include:

Dr Stephan Hesselmann, Senior Economic Adviser to the CDU/CSU Parliamentary Group, German Bundestag

Sebastian Gehrold, Senior Adviser to the Brexit Working Group, CDU/CSU Parliamentary Group, German Bundestag

Prof Willie Paterson (TBC), Honorary Professor of German and European Politics, Aston University
