Event recap: EU Security and Defence: Germany and Ireland’s Shared Values

Over the next fortnight preparations are currently underway at the European Parliament to appoint the next European Commission, with security and defence issues set to dominate the next EU mandate. Almost three years on Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine continues, the escalating conflict in the Middle East marked it’s one year anniversary this month, and across Europe an increasing number of hybrid and cyberattacks have taken place. Konrad Adenauer- Stiftung and European Movement Ireland hosted ‘Policy Priorities for Ireland and Germany for the New EU Mandate”, discussing German and Irish perspectives on security and defence issues. Noelle O Connell, CEO European Movement Ireland, was joined by Colm Brophy TD, Chairperson of the Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs, Mr. Christian Resch, Chargé d’Affaires ad Interim, Embassy at the Federal Republic of Germany, Vice Admiral (Rtd) Mark Mellet DSM, Former Chief of Staff at the Irish Defence Forces and Professor John O ’Brennan, Jean Monnet Professor of European Integration at Maynooth University.

The 21st century will be the century of Europe

Charles Michel, President of the European Council, gave the Konrad Adenauer Foundation's twelfth State of Europe speech.

Every year the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung invites the top representatives of the institutions of Europe to speak about the nature and the situation of the idea of a united Europe. In the twelfth State of Europe speech, the President of the Council summed up the challenges of the 21st century for Europe: climate change, the corona pandemic, the “digital revolution” and coping with the boom in artificial intelligence, as well as the growing pressure from authoritarian regimes.

6. F.A.Z.-KAS-Debatte zum britischen Referendum über den Verbleib in der EU

Am 23. Juni stimmen die Briten in einem Referendum über den Verbleib des Vereinigten Königreichs in der Europäischen Union ab. Laut jüngster Umfragewerte liegen die EU-Befürworter knapp vor den EU-Gegnern. Doch viele Briten werden sich erst in letzter Minute entscheiden. In einer Neuauflage der F.A.Z.-KAS-Debatte unter dem Titel „Brauchen wir London?“ haben die Teilnehmer zusammen mit dem Publikum über mögliche Abstimmungsergebnisse und über die daraus resultierenden zukünftigen Aufgaben der EU diskutiert.

Creating Sustainabale Growth in Western Economies

The Konrad Adenauer Stiftung in London held its annual conference on 11th De-cember 2012. The theme was ‘Creating Sustainable Growth in Western Econo-mies’ and the keynote speaker was Minis-ter Peter Altmaier. Throughout the day there were three panels, in addition to the keynote speech, that addressed different aspects of the challenge to create econo-mies that are sustainable on both eco-nomic and environmental terms.

On 8 March 2010 the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung held a workshop in cooperation with the European Centre for Energy and Resource Security and the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation at King’s College London, featuring high level speakers from Germany and the UK. Following the workshop Dr Jürgen Großmann, CEO of RWE, held a lecture on “Energy Security for the coming Decades” in front of a large audience.

Am 8. März 2010 führte die Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung in Kooperation mit dem European Centre for Energy and Resour-ces Security und dem International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation des King’s College London einen Workshop mit hoch-rangigen Rednern aus Deutschland und Großbritannien durch. Im Anschluss an den Workshop hielt Dr. Jürgen Großmann, Geschäftsführer von RWE, einen Vortrag zum Thema „Energiesicherheit der nächs-ten Jahrzehnte“.
