Ireland was among the first EU Member States affected by the financial and economic crisis. After implementing severe reforms, cutting costs and salaries and thus following a strict policy of austerity, the country could leave the financial assistance programme in December 2013.
In 2014 Ireland once again looks optimistically into its future. A future tightly connected to the European Union. Ireland entered the Union in 1973 together with the United Kingdom, but political discourse in Ireland is very different from that in its nearest neighbour. Ireland’s leaders today are among the most outspoken supporters of the EU.
Find out why the Irish population – even in times of crisis – backs the EU, hear more about the ideas of the Irish government on necessary improvements and the future development of the EU, exchange views on how deep scepticism can be tackled and discuss the upcoming elections to the European Parliament with the Irish Minister for European Affairs, Paschal Donohoe.
Stefan Evers MdA, Vice Chair of the CDU Parliamentary Faction to the Berlin Chamber of Deputies, will comment the speech and participate as discussant.
