Details
Although Indonesia recorded Zero Terrorist Attack status in 2023, the threat of violent extremism has not completely disappeared. Suspected terrorists continue to be arrested in various parts of the country, including Central Sulawesi, which remains a vulnerable area due to the presence of longstanding extremist networks and the growing spread of extremist propaganda through digital media.
Today, terrorist activities have increasingly shifted from physical attacks to the dissemination of extremist ideology through social media. Extremist groups use digital platforms to spread hate speech, anti-democratic narratives, and calls for violence, particularly targeting young people. This development highlights the importance of preventive approaches through education and counter-narratives. As Islamic educational institutions that uphold the values of moderation, tolerance, and peace, pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) play a strategic role in strengthening community resilience against extremism.
In response to these challenges, KAS Indonesia & Timor-Leste, together with the Center for the Study of Religion and Culture (CSRC) at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta and Pondok Pesantren Nurul Madinah Lombok Barat, organized the training "Countering Extremist Narratives: Pesantren Voices for Peace and Tolerance" to strengthen the capacity of young ustadz and ustadzah (Islamic teachers) to promote peaceful, inclusive, and tolerant narratives within their communities.
OBJECTIVES
1. To enhance young ustadz/ustadzah’s understanding of peaceful values in Islam and the dangers of extremist ideologies that pose a threat.
2. To increase young ustadz/ustadzah’s understanding and knowledge of extremist narratives and their counter-narratives.
3. To develop young ustadz/ustadzah’s ability and skills in formulating and disseminating counter-extremist narratives through sermons, religious lectures, and classroom teaching.
4. To build networks and collaboration among Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) to play an active role in preventing extremism.
