Global geopolitical developments are becoming increasingly complex, marked by conflicts, great power rivalries, and economic fragmentation that affect Indonesia through energy disruptions, price fluctuations, and market uncertainty. In responding to crises, Indonesia faces a dilemma between maintaining economic and political stability and upholding democratic principles such as transparency and accountability.
In theory, realism emphasizes prioritizing stability and security, while liberalism views democracy as a mechanism for managing conflict. However, in practice, crises often trigger democratic backsliding, including restrictions on civic space and weakened oversight.
As a large democratic country connected to the global economy, Indonesia is vulnerable to crisis-related pressures. Rapid policy responses risk shifting democratic principles, making fair, transparent, and inclusive crisis management essential.
Therefore, it is important to examine how Indonesia navigates this dilemma. The Democracy Dialogue initiated by The Habibie Center and KAS Indonesia is expected to serve as a platform for formulating responsive policy strategies while strengthening long-term democratic resilience.
