Realizing Ecological Justice and Democratic Resilience: Building Accountable Leadership for Indonesia's Sustainability

Asset Publisher

Details

The issue of social justice and the environment increasingly occupies an important space in the discourse of development and democracy in Indonesia. Ecological crises such as climate change, deforestation, pollution, and degradation of coastal ecosystems show that development can no longer be only oriented towards economic growth, but must also ensure the sustainability and well-being of the wider community. In this context, the idea of green democracy becomes particularly relevant, as it combines the principles of public participation, transparency, protection of human rights, and ecological wisdom in governance.

At the same time, the dynamics of electoral politics and democratic governance present their own challenges. A healthy democratic process needs to ensure the presence of leadership that is accountable, has integrity, and is able to put the interests of the community and environmental sustainability as priorities. The challenges in maintaining the quality of democracy, especially after the 2024 elections, are also increasingly complex, ranging from the need to expand political inclusivity, strengthen public trust in institutions, to maintain open and constructive space for citizen participation.

This context shows the importance of democratic resilience, namely the ability of the democratic system to remain upright, responsive, and adaptive in facing crises and changing times. Democratic resilience does not only rely on political institutions, but also on the synergy of various actors. Political parties, state institutions, the business world, civil society, academics, and the media have a strategic role to ensure that Indonesia's democracy not only survives, but also develops to be more inclusive and sustainability-oriented.

The government itself has taken a number of important steps to strengthen environmental governance, including through the issuance of Government Regulation No. 26 of 2024 concerning Environmental Protection and Management Plans and Government Regulation No. 27 of 2024 concerning Mangrove Protection and Rehabilitation. These policy initiatives are valuable capital, but their successful implementation is highly dependent on cross-sectoral collaboration and the support of accountable leadership that bridges ecological and democratic interests.

Thus, the National Panel in the Habibie Democracy Forum 2025 is an important space to present collective reflection, build common understanding, and strengthen the idea of accountable leadership that is able to integrate the principles of green democracy with the need to strengthen democratic resilience. This forum is expected to be not only a place for the exchange of ideas, but also a vehicle to encourage cross-actor synergy in building a more democratic, inclusive, and sustainable future for Indonesia.
