Details

In the last decade, Corporate Social Responsibility, or CSR, has matured into an indispensable factor for sustainable business development, constantly outgrowing the notion of mere philanthropy. Especially in an Asian context, where economic discrepancies and poverty remain symptomatic, CSR can be seen as an invaluable asset for both local communities and businesses. However, a third entity comes into play when closing the gap between society and private enterprises: The media, as one of the most influential and powerful agents in society, has the potential to foster trust in communities by exposing bad practices on the one hand and commending businesses for good practices on the other.

Naturally, the media can only live up to such a role if journalists are capable of adhering to professional and responsible reporting standards as well. In many areas, the media has yet to take the initiative to further shape and engage in the regional CSR discourse. After two fruitful conferences on these topics, organized through the Social and Economic Governance Programme Asia of the Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation in Ho Chi Minh City (2014) and Singapore (2015), it was decided to publish a book encompassing perspectives of the media pertaining to CSR from a variety of Asian countries.

With this book launch-cum-conference, the Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation in cooperation with InnoGlobal Institute (IGI) and ARCON aim to provide a platform for experts to present and discuss their ideas on the relation between CSR and the media in an Asian context.
