High energy prices are major challenges for Europe and Japan. Dependency on primary energy imports has financial and political consequences for both and carbon dioxide emissions impact global warming. To compete globally, and to provide stable energy supply at reasonable prices, Japan and Europe need new technologies and innovation in the fields of production, distribution, storage and use of primary and secondary energy. Far-reaching reforms have been launched to address these challenges. By June, the 28 member states of the European Union had to implement most of the provisions of a new “Energy Efficiency Directive” (EED). In Japan, the government introduced a new Strategic Energy Plan which will pave the way for reforming the supply and demand structure of the Japanese energy market. During this event, our distinguished speakers from Europe and Japan will reflect on the existing challenges for safe and affordable energy and discuss possible solutions.
