The Role of EU and NATO for Japan's Security - Foundation Office Japan / Regional Economic Programme Asia (SOPAS)
Expert conference
Details
Japan currently opens itself for multinational security policy cooperation and will be able to engage in a more active role in the international landscape. Japan’s enhanced participation helps position it closer to its western partners and, hence, strengthens its standing in the international community. Widened multinational participation also means for Japan to be able to better protect its citizens e.g. in crisis regions.
The European Union (EU) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) as two major multinational entities are in close partnership with Japan. Given the different profiles of EU and NATO in terms of their security policy and military dimensions and their different roles and scope of action on a global level as well as towards the Asian-Pacific region, this partnership provides a variety of possibilities for enhanced cooperation with Japan.
During this one-day conference we are going to highlight the roles of EU and NATO as international players within the context of Asian-Pacific security policy and to also differentiate the respective profiles and approaches of the two multinational entities. Based on these findings, our distinguished experts from Japan, NATO and the EU will also discuss and identify possible opportunities and challenges for closer cooperation in the areas of international security policy, global peace support and crisis management, disaster relief and humanitarian assistance, non-proliferation, as well as defence against emerging threats from piracy, terrorism and cyber-attacks.
