The Ignalina nuclear power plant was shut down on New Year's Eve 31.12.2009. The decommissioning of the Ignalina nuclear power plant was one of the conditions of the Lithuanian EU-Accession treaty. Lithuanian politicians still tried to negotiate the decommissioning with the European Commission in order to postpone it for at least one year. But the negotiations were unsuccessful.
After New Year's celebrations massmedia reported about low energytax increase, possibilities of electricity import via Belarus as well as about the plan to increase and to use full capacities of remaining power plants in the country. Moreower the controverse debate about the growing energy dependence or independence from Russia got even louder.
In our discussion club „politika.lt“ on __Wednesday, January 20,__ we will debate the issue of decommissioning the only nuclear power plant in Lithuania and the whole region.
