Palestinian Entrepreneurs visit Europe’s bustling startup Hub, Berlin - Foundation Office Palestinian Territories
On November 25, 2018, KAS Ramallah kick started a six-day study and dialogue program for young representatives from the Palestinian startup sector. The delegation, which consisted of 14 young women and men from the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip, included partners of KAS Ramallah as well as local organizations that support KAS’ work in the Palestinian territories. The represented organizations were Build Palestine, Leaders and Gaza Sky Geeks.
The program aimed at introducing the young entrepreneurs to the German ecosystem and the renowned startup scene in Berlin. It was also a unique opportunity for the delegation to network amongst itself, as the young entrepreneurs are generally unable to meet due to travel restrictions. The program offered the delegation a great opportunity to network with German counterparts and included meetings with German politicians, the private sector and rising startups.
The program included a one day political tour in Berlin, to introduce the delegation to the political system in Germany and explain the complex political history of Berlin. The delegation toured the city with Dr. Anke Fromme, a German political scientist and tour guide and ended the day with a designated tour with the Berlin Wall Foundation at the site of the Bernauer Street.
The first official day of the program started at the BMW Foundation with a series of meetings, the first of which given by Ms. Martina Ziebell, CEO of MENA Business to discuss the cooperation between Arab and German Startups. The second presentation was given by Ms. Amel Saidane, the President of the Tunisian Startup Association on the Tunisian Startup Act. The final meeting at the BMW Foundation was held with Ms. Bassat Helmi, Co-Chair of the Digital Arabia Network (DAN) to introduce the delegates to DAN’s Crowdstorm competition titled “Your Vision for the Digital Future of the Arab Region”. The three speakers presented their work and engaged in a lengthy discussion with the participants on the challenges, opportunities and future of social entrepreneurship and startups in Germany and the Arab world.
The day ended with a presentation given by Mr. Matthias Schäfer, Head of the Team ‘Economic Policy’ at the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung’s Main Department of Politics and Consulting. Mr. Schäfer first gave an in depth presentation about KAS and its interest in the startup scene and briefed the delegates about the work currently being done to empower young German entrepreneurs. The delegates were then given the time to engage in a discussion with three students from the KAS Startup College to learn more about their experience and their work to launch their startups.
On Tuesday, the delegation visited Enpact, a non-profit organization founded with the aim of strengthening economic relations between young entrepreneurs from the startup scenes of the Middle East, Africa and Europe. The delegates were welcomed by the founder Mr. Matthias Treutwein who introduced them to Enpact’s main projects. Besan Abu Joudeh, Founder of Build Palestine, said the meeting was one of the highlights of the program as it gave her many new ideas to advance her work in Palestine. The delegates were later introduced to Mr. Hans-Wilhelm Dünn, President of the Cyber Security Council Germany. The conversation covered topics regarding German strategies to improve the cyber security sector and main challenges in the field. Mr. Dünn and the delegates discussed ways to cooperate and advance cyber security relations between the two countries.
The group also visited Careem, a ride-hailing app in MENA, Pakistan & Turkey, that recently opened its first European office in Berlin, and had a technical discussion with the engineers behind the app. The two sides exchanged expertise about developing products, resources and the secrets behind developing successful apps. The day ended with a large scale networking event at IXDS, a leading service design studio in Germany, where three representatives from BuildPalestine, Leaders and Gaza Sky Geeks gave presentations about their work to promote Palestinian entrepreneurship and entrepreneurs. The floor was open for questions and the delegates were able to network and discuss possible cooperation opportunities with the attendees of the event.
Der erste offizielle Tag des Programmes begann in der BMW Stiftung mit einer Reihe von Meetings. Das erste Meeting wurde mit Frau Martina Ziebell, CEO von MENA Business, gehalten, um die gegenwärtige Zusammenarbeit zwischen arabischen und deutschen Startups zu diskutieren. Die zweite Präsentation wurde von Frau Amel Saidane, der Präsidentin der tunesischen Startup Association, gehalten und beinhaltete das tunesische Startup Act. Das abschließende Treffen in der BMW Stiftung fand zusammen mit Frau Bassat Helmi, Co-Vorsitzende des Digital Arabia Network (DAN), statt, um den Delegierten den Crowdstorm Wettbewerb von DAN mit dem Titel "Deine Vision für die digitale Zukunft der arabischen Region" vorzustellen. Die drei Referenten präsentierten ihre Arbeit und führten anschließend mit den Teilnehmern eine ergiebige Diskussion über die Herausforderungen, Chancen und die Zukunft sozialen Unternehmertums sowie Startups in Deutschland und der arabischen Welt.
Der Tag endete mit einem Vortrag von Herrn Matthias Schäfer, dem Leiter des Teams "Wirtschaftspolitik" in der Hauptabteilung Politik und Beratung der Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung. Herr Schäfer referierte zunächst ausführlich über die KAS und ihr Interesse an der Startup Szene bevor er die Delegierten über die derzeitige Arbeit der KAS zur Stärkung junger deutscher Unternehmer informierte. Anschließend erhielten die Delegierten ausreichend Zeit für eine Diskussion mit drei Studenten des KAS Startup College teilzunehmen, die über ihre Erfahrungen und ihre Arbeit im Startups Sektor berichteten.
Am Dienstag besuchte die Delegation Enpact, eine gemeinnützige Organisation, die mit dem Ziel gegründet wurde, die wirtschaftlichen Beziehungen zwischen jungen Unternehmern aus den Startup Szenen des Nahen Ostens, Afrikas und Europas zu stärken. Die Delegierten wurden von deren Gründer Matthias Treutwein begrüßt, der ihnen die Hauptprojekte von Enpact präsentierte. Besan Abu Joudeh, Gründerin von Build Palestine, bezeichnete das Treffen als einen der Höhepunkte des Programmes, da es ihr viele neue Ideen für ihre eigene Arbeit gegeben hat. Die Delegierten wurden später Herrn Hans-Wilhelm Dünn, dem Präsidenten des Cyber Security Council Germany, vorgestellt. Das Gespräch mit behandelte die deutschen Strategien zur Verbesserung des Cybersicherheit und die wichtigsten Herausforderungen in diesem Bereich. Herr Dünn und die Delegierten diskutierten verschiedene Möglichkeiten zur Zusammenarbeit und Verbesserung der Cyber Sicherheitsbeziehungen zwischen beiden Ländern.
On Wednesday, the delegates had a morning meeting with Attorney Dr. Christoph Allmendinger to discuss the topic of startups and venture capital. Later the delegates visited Impact Hub Berlin and met with Ms. Maja Rotter and Ms. Sophie Münzberg. The delegation was extremely excited to learn more about Impact Hub, a very attractive co-working space with multiple offices around the world. The day ended with a dinner talk with four German experts who once worked and lived in Palestine. The delegates exchanged insights about the situation in the region and ways to empower youth in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip.
On Thursday, the program saw the delegates meeting with Ms. Nora Hauptmann, a project manager at betterplace lab and later with Dr. Peter Fischer-Bollin, Deputy Director of the Main Department European and International Cooperation at the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and Mr. Thomas Birringer, head of the team Middle East and North Africa. The delegates introduced themselves and their work and discussed the political, social and economic situation in the region and how the startup scene is impacted and shaped by the current facts on the ground. Later Ms. Josefina Nungesser, Director of Trend and Innovation Scouting at the Germany Trade and Invest introduced the delegation to GTAI’s efforts to promote entrepreneurship and the co-working spaces across Germany to promote youth entrepreneurs.
On the last day, Factory Berlin welcomed our delegation and gave a tour of its spacious premises. Mr. Filip Valusaik gave a presentation about the history and the development of Factory Berlin and the work carried out to host and empower new startups and some of the major IT companies in the world. Mr Valusaik introduced the group to a Palestinian entrepreneur who is a member of Factory Berlin and who is currently developing his own startup in Germany. Mr. Salah Ghanem spoke of the differences in the startup scenes in both Palestine and Germany and the difficulties that faced him in both countries. The delegation exchanged thoughts with Mr. Ghanem and connected in order to facilitate future cooperation.
Am Donnerstag traf sich die Delegation mit Frau Nora Hauptmann, einer Projektmanagerin im Betterplace Lab. Daran anschließend folgte ein Termin mit Dr. Peter Fischer-Bollin, dem stellvertretenden Leiter der Hauptabteilung Europäische und Internationale Zusammenarbeit der Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, und zuletzt Herrn Thomas Birringer, Leiter des Teams Naher Osten und Nordafrika. Die Delegierten stellten sich sowie ihre Arbeit vor und diskutierten die politische, soziale und wirtschaftliche Situation innerhalb der Region und wie die Startup Szene von den aktuellen Geschehnissen vor Ort beeinflusst und geprägt wird. Abschließend stellte Frau Josefina Nungesser, Direktorin für Trend- und Innovationsscouting bei Germany Trade and Invest, der Gruppe die Bemühungen seitens GTAI vor, Unternehmertum und Co-Working Spaces innerhalb Deutschlands aktiv zu fördern und an junge Unternehmer heranzutragen.
Am letzten Tag wurde unsere Delegation von der Factory Berlin begrüßt und dabei durch ihre großzügigen Räumlichkeiten geführt. Herr Filip Valusaik hielt einen Vortrag über die Geschichte und Entwicklung der Factory Berlin sowie den Bemühungen nicht nur neue Startups zu beherbergen sondern auch die großen IT Konzerne. Daraufhin stellte Herr Valusaik der Gruppe einen palästinensischen Unternehmer, selbst ein Mitglied der Factory Berlin, vor, welcher derzeit ein eigenes Startup in Deutschland aufbaut. Abschließend sprach Herr Salah Ghanem über die Unterschiede zwischen den Startup Szenen Palästinas und Deutschlands sowie über die Schwierigkeiten, mit denen sie in beiden Ländern konfrontiert sind. Die Delegation nutzte das Gespräch, um eine mögliche zukünftige Kooperation einzuleiten.
