The study aims to go beyond the circumstantial explanations and interpretations that frequently appear in the public sphere, especially during election periods, and to answer essential questions: why does the diaspora vote the way it does and how does it generally relate to Romania? The research was conducted using qualitative methods—focus groups/interviews—which allow for the exploration of the motivations, values, and political dilemmas of Romanians living abroad. These were carried out by IRES in countries with a significant presence of Romanian citizens, and the analysis and presentation of the results were conducted by sociologist Barbu Mateescu.
