Empowering Young People to Secure Their Own Future
As part of its efforts to promote peace and security in West Africa, the SIPODI Programme supports the One Hundred Women, Youth for Peace and Security initiative in Benin, implemented by the African Network for Peacekeeping (RAMP-Benin).
Launched in 2024, the programme trains 100 young people from four localities. Each stage gathers 25 participants. The first cohort of 2025 took place in Natitingou, Atacora department, northern Benin.
Building a New Generation of Peacebuilders
Over five days, participants engaged in interactive sessions on key topics:
-
UN Resolutions 1325 and 2250, stressing the role of women and youth in peace processes.
-
The pillars of participation, protection, and prevention for sustainable stability.
-
The psychology of conflict and mediation techniques to address tensions.
-
Modern challenges such as radicalisation and online hate speech, with an emphasis on non-violent communication.
Discussions also highlighted the protection of civilians, the role of civil society organisations in conflict zones, and the complementarity of regional and international actors.
Impact Beyond Words
The 25 young participants from Atacora strengthened their knowledge across 16 thematic areas, developed resilience, and renewed their commitment to peacebuilding.
Key recommendations include:
-
Launching community awareness campaigns on peace and human rights.
-
Establishing local mediation initiatives to reduce violence.
-
Creating youth networks and peace clubs for knowledge-sharing and cooperation.
Sustaining the Momentum
The enthusiasm and dedication of participants illustrate the positive impact of this initiative. Ensuring sustainability will require continuous support and tailored follow-up.
For nearly 10 years, the SIPODI West Programme of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung has been working across West Africa alongside states and communities to strengthen regional security. The next stages of the programme in Benin will take place in the coming weeks.
